Artist Statement
I've always been fascinated with the emotive power of color and the process of applying paint to a surface. What fuels my work is to explore the interrelationships of color, drawn, painted and abstracted through geometric forms, time and space. In my process, I start with an idea and intention, but I rarely prepare a drawing in advance. Instead, I paint intuitively, discovering and executing simultaneously on canvas, panel or paper, and responding to the emotions that arise within me on any given day. This visual vocabulary allows me to be in the immediate present and gives me the freedom to express myself more creatively. What I'm after is a sense of excitement and playfulness in my work, trusting my gut and creating the conditions for something to happen.
Like every artist, everything I see and experience in life influences my art. I especially draw inspiration from the works of Arranz Bravo, Stuart Davis, Richard Diebenkorn, Elizabeth Murray and Frank Stella.
Whatever I bring to my work, however, I want it to be honest and my own. And if my work is successful on any level, it is to create something completely unexpected that will be visually interesting to the viewer.
